The forgotten children…
Unfortunately, due to a number of reasons, especially birth conrol, millons of children are living on the streets. The children who are brought to the world by their parents unconciously, who haven’t considered their financial means, are suffering from many difficulites in their early age.One of their problems is their inabilty to continue their eduaction as they have to earn money to provide food for their families. To raise productive children for society, parents should plan ahead by and take into account their living standards for their children’s basic and educational needs. In those countries that suffer from malnutrition and war, thousands of children are forced to compensate for their families whose responsiblity it was to provide a sustainable future for their children. As a conscious individual, who used to be a child with needs, simply witnessing these events without action is inhumane. Even if we could not reach every country and every child who lives on the street, we can support the foundations which are working very hard towards this aim supporting our human duties. We should not forget that it could be us or our children in the war or on the street.
Your support is important to the Turkey Education Volunteers Foundation which I follow and admire.
The following is an article entitled: “OUR MISSION”, from the Turkey Education volunteers Foundation web site…
Education volunteers have developed and carried out activities and education programs that aim to raise children from the ages of 7 to 16 who are dependent on the principles and values of the Turkish Republic. Such values include: rationalism, responsibility, confidence, mindfulness, critical thinking, creativity, pacifism, respect and non-discriminatation towards others’ ideas, beliefs, gender, ethnic grouping, and language. People who volunteer for education projects in Turkey focus on special instruction programs that include: education parks, learning centers, and mobile education facilities.
Respectfully Yours

INFORMATION FROM INTERNET
There are children who live on the street without refuge and who have lost touch with their families. They often have no choice but to commit crime in order to feed themselves, and they sometimes use drugs like glue and thinners, which they sniff in order that they might have some escape from their reality. These children have hardly any contact with the associations that are responsible for them, such as their families, schools, or children foundations. They often run away from home because of unsuitable living conditions, thus breaking ties with their family and with society. This results in large communities of children living on the streets and seeking shelter under bridges. These streets become their world. As these communities grow, some of these children work the streets in order to ‘keep the pot boiling’ for their street-families.
Selling tissues, gum, water, cards, or offering menial services such as shoeshining or cleaning car windscreens at traffic lights, or simply begging are common examples of their livelihoods. Generally, however, they aren’t addicted to substances, and they maintain family relations.
IMPORTANT FACTORS THAT FORCE CHILDREN ONTO THE STREETS
The source of these issues is that there are economic problems that affect the family. Between 82% and 89% of these street-children have inherited their problems from poor family relations. According to research, their parents generally aren’t well-educated, with large numbers of fathers having only graduated from primary school, and more than half of the mothers never even attended school. Research also emphasizes that 90% of the mothers have never worked out of the house before and 44% of the fathers are unemployed. And it is these families who have got the highest numbers of dependents. Statistics show that in İzmir 26% of these street-families have got between 4 and 6 children, whilst 26% have got more than 6 children. In Turkey, this ever-increasing number of street children are congregating in the biger cities, with the highest number of substance-addicted children living in İstanbul, Ankara and Uşak. This problem is shown to be common with various large countries in the world.
THE DANGERS IN THE STREETS FOR CHILDREN
Sadly, these children face a multitude of dangers including violence against the person, physical and/or sexual exploitation, forced crime, chronic and dangerous disease, kidnapping, and even murder.
WHY DO THEY NEED DRUGS?
Drugs help to numb the pain of their sorrowful realities as well as the physical pain they experience after being beaten. The drugs also help them to feel more confident and brave to face their hardships, including the embrassment of begging for bread. Furthermore, like all of us, they desire pleasure and thus use drugs to enhance their experience through hallucination. Apart from these, it becomes important fort hem to establish their self-identity within their communities who live on the streets.
There is hope to provide a better future for these street-children with the help and support of UNICEF, which I personally trust and follow their worldwide actions.
ABOUT UNICEF

UNICEF also supports and safeguards children against violence, exploitation, and the dangers of illnesses such as AIDS.
